Se acerca el bicentenario de Springfield y la profesora de Lisa, la srta. Hoover, les encarga un trabajo sobre Jebediah Springfield. Investigando para su trabajo, Lisa descubre que Jebediah no fue un héroe como todo el pueblo cree, sino un cruel pirata llamado Hans Sprungfeld. Lisa trata de hacerle ver a todo el pueblo la verdad. Mientras, Homer intenta conseguir el puesto de pregonero en la cabalgata del bicentenario.
